What is CCO Wear Plate?

Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) wear plates are bimetallic composite plates produced by automatic open-arc welding of high-chromium carbide flux-cored wire onto a mild steel base (Q235/Q345). The overlay forms a complex carbide matrix (M7C3 carbides >60% volume, hardness 1400-1800 HV) for unmatched abrasion and impact resistance.

No delamination, uniform chemistry, and metallurgical bond ensure reliable performance in harsh environments. Ideal alternative to quenched & tempered wear plates.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Superior Abrasion Resistance: 20x mild steel, 8x heat-treated alloys; fibrous carbide distribution deflects particles.
  • High Temperature Tolerance: Up to 600°C continuous; no softening or spalling.
  • Impact & Fatigue Resistance: Ductile base absorbs shocks; suitable for moderate to high-impact.
  • Cost-Effective Longevity: Reduces downtime 50%; lower lifecycle cost than ceramics or AR steel.

CCO Wear Plate Grades

HH-700B (Standard Grade)

C 4.8-5.5%, Cr 23-28%; ≥60 HRC; for general abrasion with medium impact.

HH-850A (High Chromium)

C 5.0-6.0%, Cr 35-40%; ≥60 HRC; for severe abrasion in high-wear zones.

Standard Sizes & Dimensions

Overlay + Base (mm)Size (mm)Cladded Area (m²/sheet)
3+31000×15001.5
3+5 / 4+6 / 6+61480×30414.5
8+8 / 10+101470×30624.5

Custom thicknesses, widths, and lengths available. Flatness tolerance ±3mm/m.

Design of chromium carbide overlay wear plate

DESIGNED FOR MODERATE IMPACT AND SEVERE ABRASION

The overlay surface of CCO plate will consist of a series of beads with numerous hairline cracks in them. These properly spaced crosscheck cracks are a natural phenomenon and are beneficial to the material. The cracks propagate through the overlay and end at the fusion line.

Cutting

Plasma burning, air arc, abrasive saw or water jet.

Welding

Our CCO overlay plate can be joined by welding the substrate to substrate using 309 weld wire/rod.

Bending

Using a press brake, forming should be perpendicular to the weld pass direction. Plate rolling should be performed in the directions of the overlay beads.

Applications in Various Wear Scenarios

Overlay plates are versatile and tailored to specific wear challenges. Below are examples across industries.

Sliding Abrasion

Used in chutes, hoppers, and conveyor systems in mining or aggregate processing. CCO plates excel here, resisting material flow that erodes surfaces.

Gouging Abrasion

Ideal for high-stress areas like bucket lips and crusher liners in quarrying, where deep scratching and tearing occur.

Moderate Impact with Abrasion

Suitable for hammer mills and moderate-duty crushers. Products like Super-C® handle combined impact and sliding without cracking.

High Impact Wear

Applied in heavy-duty equipment like dragline buckets in mining, providing toughness against severe blows and abrasion.

High-Temperature Erosion

In coal-fired power plants or incinerators, borocarbide overlays protect boiler tubes and ash handling equipment from heat and particle erosion.

Abrasion with Corrosion

In corrosive environments like acidic mining slurries or chemical processing, overlays provide dual protection against wear and chemical attack.

For fabrication, these plates can be cut via plasma, water jet, or abrasive saw; welded using compatible rods (e.g., 309 for CCO); and bent perpendicular to weld beads for forming.

FAQ

In severe sliding abrasion conditions, Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates consistently outperform solid AR plates (AR400/500/600) by 5–20 times due to the extremely hard Cr₇C₃ carbides (1700–2000 HV).

Quenched and tempered high-carbon alloy steel with hardness from 360–600 BHN (e.g., AR400, AR500, Hardox, NM500). Excellent for impact + moderate abrasion.

A composite wear plate: mild steel base (Q235/A36) + thick chromium-carbide hardfacing layer (3–20 mm) applied by open-arc welding. Surface hardness 55–65 HRC.

  • 5–20× longer life in sliding abrasion
  • Lower cost per ton of material processed
  • Lighter weight for equivalent service life
  • Can be repaired by re-overlaying

C: 3.0–5.5% Cr: 18–32% Mn: 0.5–3% Si: 0.5–2% (Mo, Nb, V optional)

Cut: Plasma/laser/waterjet from mild steel side
Form: Bend perpendicular to weld beads
Weld: Base-to-base with mild steel rods; overlay-to-overlay with hardfacing rods
